A child rapist who raped and murdered a nine-year-old girl 30 years ago could be granted parole and released into the community.
Rodney Thomas Clark murdered Debbie Keegan in Tregear, Sydney in 1987. He received a life sentence for the brutal killing.
Clark, who was 21 at the time, used a ladder to break into the bedroom where the little girl was sleeping close to her sister.
Clark covered her mouth and raped her three times before suffocating her to death.
He was sentenced to life in prison for the murder in 1988, but may soon be released into the community, 9 News reported.
Since 2015 he has been eligible for parole but his recent applications have not been granted.
The victim's family was told by the Serious Offenders Review Council they planned to reduce his security classification- making him eligible for day release.
The recommendation is still being decided on by the corrective service commissioner, before it can regress to the parole board.
Debbie Keegan's sister said: 'He needs to stay there (in jail). My family is the one that has been given the life sentence, not him.'
