In Bangladesh, women and children are the most vulnerable beings of society. Women have been subject to abuse and attack because of their bodies. It is totally incomprehensible why innocent children are attacked, instead of being given the love and care they so deserve. They are being raped. They are being killed.
In the first 18 days of this month, 18 children have been killed. In February last year, 19 had been killed in 29 days. So the propensity to kill children is on the rise. According to Bangladesh Child Rights Forum, 45 children have been murdered in the past one and a half months. Even more alarming, some are being killed by their own parents. Seven have been killed in this manner over the past one and a half months. Many of the murdered children were victims of family feuds, dowry, extramarital affairs of their parents and similar circumstances. Some children are killed after abduction. Some are victims of hostilities with the neighbours. Certain cruel persons inflict their brutality on the children of their enemies as a form of vengeance.
The number of child rape victims is shocking. Bangladesh Child Rights Forum says that over 400 children were raped in Bangladesh last year. Of them, 64 were victims of gang-rape. It is horrifying to see the victims of gang rape are between the ages of four to nine. The children are raped, killed and their bodies simply discarded. What society are we living in? How can such heinous acts of perversion occur?
In general it is considered that the lack of justice leads to the increase in all sorts of crimes. Either the criminals are not being punished or there are fewer punishments than there are criminal incidents. The criminals feel they will get off the hook easily. However, in recent times stern action has been taken in the case of certain child murders. So why does murder and perversion against children continue to increase?
This cannot go on. It is imperative that extensive and coordinated state and social initiatives be taken up against the murder, sexual abuse and other brutalities against children.
